Alternative help/therapy for autism and/or ADHD

I will begin with saying that some people will find some of the stuff I write in this post ”fuzzy”. You may thing so, it’s ok, but I don’t see any harm in trying everything that may help, even the ”fuzzy” things.
Some of this have helped others, so maybe it can help you/the person with autism/adhd that you want to help.

Herbs and vitamins

Remember that before you or your child start taking any herbs or vitamins you should talk to a doctor. The only completly safe ones in this list is chamomille, garlic and rooibos. Usually the other stuff in this list isn’t dangerous, but it’s always good to be a bit extra cautious.

Vitamin A – can improve language skills, attention and social participation.
Vitamin B1 – may improve focus and concentration.
Vitamin B3 – helps to balance blood sugar, which can lead to more steady energy levels and reduce outbursts and meltdowns.
Vitamin B6 – can reduce behavioural problems, improve concentration, eye contact and learning ability.
Vitamin B12 – can be a mood stabilizer and reduce problems with executive functions (memory, learning ability, planning, etc.).
Vitamin C – may boost memory, alleviate depression, increase alertness in the brain and reduce problems in understanding non-verbal communication.
Vitamin D – anti-inflammatory and helps the body get rid of free radicals. (Some say that inflammation and toxins in the body is the reason for autism and ADHD.)
Magnesium – can help with hyperactivity/restlessness, confusion, learning problems and improve concentrating.
Zinc – may decrease impulsivity and inflammation, cleanse the body of heavy metals, reduce stress and help prevent indigestion.
Omega 3 – reducing dejection and helps to protect the brain cells.
St. John’s Wort – reduces dejection and depression
Valerian – help decreasing worries and anxiety.
Chamomile – helps with nervousness, and is relaxing.
Rooibos – relaxing and mood stabilizing.
Ginseng – reduces stress and fatigue and increases memory, concentration and endurance.
Garlic – anti-inflammatory, enhances the immune system.

Essential oils

You can either use the oils by pouring them in an aroma lamp or mix them with oils (live olive oil and almond oil) and use it for massage. You can also use it in a solid perfume, it’s easy to make. Do not use pure essential oils directly on your skin, if you are not sure that it is an essential oil that you can do so with (like lavender), or if someone is sensitive to strong odours.

Lavender – soothing and relaxing.
Orange – refreshing and can help with depression.
Vetiver -drowsy and mood-stabilizing
Cedarwood – relaxing and cleansing.
Peppermint – increases the ability to concentrate.
Neroli – helps with compulsive behavior.
Sandalwood – helps against compulsive and aggressive behavior and can also soothe upset feelings.

Colors

Colors are actually very important for how we react.
Therefore, there are some colors that can be better to use than others, both in clothing and surrounding. Of course this depends on what you have problem with, the color that is best for you may not be as good for someone else.

Red – stimulates the body and mind and increases blood circulation.
Orange – recovers and increases energy levels and stimulates emotions.
Yellow – stimulates nerves and purifies the body.
Blue – relaxing and pain relieving.
Green – calming and refreshing.
Pink – love, relaxing and soothes aggressiveness.
Purple – Increases spiritual awareness, mood stabilizing and increase concentration.

Gemstones

The stones can be used in slightly different ways, including as jewelry, meditate with, healing and sleeping with. Some people prefer to swim with their gemstones or wash themself with water that the gemstones have been in. Try which method suits you best.
If the stone does not feel right, do not use it. And there are other gemstones than those than I have written about that may be suitable for you.

Smoky quartz – increases perception, learning abilities and organizational skills and eases depression.
Amethyst – relieve insomnia (especially due to nightmares), balance blood sugar, eases headaches, soothe frustration, increases concentration, helps to get rid of bad addictions and eases stress (= a soothing and cleansing stone).
Sugilite – protecting against emotional shock and trauma, eases disappointments, eases stress, reduces hostility, reduces learning problems and motor skill problems.
Aquamarine – calms the nerves, mood stabilizing, clear the mind, helps overcome phobias and helps to express emotions.
Fluorite – increases concentration and memory, helps in decision making, helps the body absorb nutrients and help for insomnia.
Moldavit – purifies physical and mental blockages, stimulate joy and love, helps to let go of negative relationships and habits, and increases the ability to feel social connection.
Hematite – helps with memory problems, increases concentration, increases will power and self-control, neutralize negative emotions and increase the uptake of iron (which can reduce fatigue.)
Emerald – helps the body to provide new energy, reduces depression, strengthens the mind, calms both mind and body and increases patience.
Lapis Lazuli – protecting, increase self confidence and inner peace, reduce restlessness and helps with shyness.
Charoite – reduces obsessions, mood stabilizing, helps to overcome fears and helps the body to recover from fatigue.
Citrine – ease depression, anxiety and fear, reduces stomach problems and allergies.

Other kinds of help and therapes

In addition to what I have already mentioned, there are some other things that have helped people with ADHD and/or autism.
Some out of these things are:

Gluten and casein-free diet – which means food without gluten (ie, flour) and without milk. Even sweeteners, flavor enhancers, yeast, colorings and preservatives should be avoided in this diet.
Ayurveda – This is a kind of traditional Indian medicine. I personally recommend to follow dietary and exercise advice and all that kind of stuff, but avoid their medications as they may contain some not so nice plants.
Art therapy – More about art therapy can be found here .
Drama Therapy – Yes that is kinda like art therapy but with drama instead of colors and pictures. In other words it uses theater techniques to improve mental health and personal development. More about that here.
Hippotherapy – More on this here .
Music TherapyHere you have more info on this.
Yoga – A good video on yoga for kids (and adults) with special needs. There’s more of these kinds of videos on You Tube.
Acupuncture – More about acupuncture can be found here.

I hope I helped you find something useful in this post.
Don’t hesitate to try some of it, even if you think it sounds ”fuzzy”.

Have you ever considered about adding a little bit more than just your articles?
I mean, what you say is important and everything. But think about if you added some great images or videos to give your posts more, ”pop”! Your content is excellent but with images and clips, this website could undeniably be one of the very best in its niche. Amazing blog!

I don’t have the knowledge or time really to make videos and I do use pics sometimes if I find anyone I think look good. And I don’t really think I have any niche, I write about stuff I find interesting and they ar in several areas, from anime to horror to psychological disorders to folklore.
